I’ve been asked to do a guest post on this blog, which I really enjoy. My wife and I are trying to make a long-term change in our lives to improve our health and fitness. I’ve been doing yoga about a year and a half now, and my wife started a little over a year ago. We both use yoga mats. I use a cheap one and she uses a nicer one.

I don’t use a yoga mat, because of the following reasons: 1. I’m a runner, so I’m not doing yoga for the exercise effect. 2. I’m not a yoga fan. 3. I don’t like yoga. 4. I never tried yoga. 5. I don’t need a yoga mat. 6. Yoga isn’t for me, because I’m not spiritual. 7. I don’t like the looks of yoga. 8. I won’t get a yoga mat. 9. Other people who do yoga don’t want to talk to me. 10. I don’t like the looks of yoga. 11. I know better than to try it. 12. I don’t want to be seen practicing yoga. 13

Like most people, I love yoga. The practice of yoga has existed for thousands of years and has developed into many forms. There are many different yoga poses available for you and me to try, but the one I’m most familiar with is the yoga mat.. When I started teaching yoga courses on campus, I grew weary of carrying about my yoga mat since I didn’t have enough time to drop it off at my dorm before class. It was also difficult for me to store it beneath my desk since I was afraid it might trip me or someone else.

So I simply left it in my room one day. I had no intention of leaving it in there for the remainder of the semester.

A mat is still in my possession. They’re my favorite, particularly when I’m doing Headstands or sitting on my knees. But, for the most part, the mat is rolled up in the corner of the room, serving mostly as a reminder to return my attention to my breath, even when I’m not washing the dishes.

Without a Mat Yoga

I observed that the first class I taught without my mat, I was moving about the room a lot while I performed the postures. I let my energy change, and before I knew it, I was dancing around the front of the room and among the kids, smiling and laughing and letting my body carry me wherever it needed to go.

I occasionally take up all of the space in the house during my home practice, flowing around various rooms and stopping to toss a toy to the dog in between breaths.

To me, the mat has always felt like a box, with just so much space to work with. If my toe went off it, I felt like I was doing something wrong, and I had to be careful about being in the right place for certain poses since it was sloppy to be in the back when you wanted to step back for a Low Lunge.

There’s nothing left to contain myself or my flow without a mat.

Changing My Attitude

I was able to return to the mat with a greater knowledge of what yoga meant to me after allowing myself the opportunity to move without limitations. I no longer viewed my mat as a cage after taking a class and unrolling it with everyone else’s.

Instead, I saw the yoga mats as place settings at a dinner table, inviting us all to participate.

I was enraged with my mat when I left it behind that fateful day before class, for intruding on my wants and dampening my style while it was both laid out and folded up.

It made me feel assaulted, which led me to believe that there was something more going on with me. I felt like the mat was stifling my movement, but the truth was that I wasn’t allowing myself to move freely.

It took some time for me to feel comfortable going around my pupils and dancing around my living room even without the mat. It took a long time for me to let go of the notion that yoga had to be rigorous and quiet.

I discovered what my practice might be after I pushed beyond what I thought I understood, and I was able to soar both on and off the mat. The idea is to be open to the possibilities and not to allow anything, even yourself or a mat, hold you back.
