So, how can you increase your arm strength just via yoga? Is it even feasible to strengthen your arms without using weights or other equipment?

1. Vinyasa Yoga

Upward-Facing-DogThe traditional sequence of flowing into Plank, down to Chaturanga, into Upward Facing Dog, and then pushing oneself into Downward Dog is one of the greatest for developing arm strength. As you perform this flow, you’ll be using every muscle in your arms and shoulder girdle.

It’s no surprise that the Ashtangis are so strong! Every day, I suggest doing at least five to ten vinyasas in your practice.

2. Chaturanga Dandasana (Chaturanga Dandasana)

ChaturangaMany of the postures that people believe are helpful for increasing arm strength, such as arm balances and other straight-arm poses, are really not the best.

Hanging out in Crow, for example, may seem to train your arms, but it’s really more of a core strength position, since you’re depending on the stacking of your arm joints to keep you upright rather than arm power.

You work with bent arms in Chaturanga, which causes the engagement to be considerably stronger. Holding this position for a few breaths a few times throughout your practice will target your triceps and lower arm muscles effectively.

Downward-Facing Dog is the third position.

Downward-Facing-DogThis position is one of my favorites for increasing arm strength since it operates in a different manner than most other postures. You’re pushing the floor away from you in Downward-Facing Dog, trying to put more weight onto your legs.

You’re also using your arms to rotate them inside, which recruits new muscle groups. Downward Dog, when done correctly and consistently, can strengthen the minor supporting muscles in your arms.

4. Pushups like a Yogi

Yogi-pushupWhen this one is given in a yoga class, it typically draws a lot of moans, but it is one of the best for arm strength. In a yogi push-up, you’ll begin in plank position, with your hands exactly under your shoulders. Then, much as in Chaturanga, you’ll hug your elbows into your ribs.

Make sure your core is fully engaged and your hips are buoyant. You’ll then push yourself back into Plank. This is a tough exercise! Each practice, do five to ten of them. If it helps you maintain correct form, you may drop to your knees. While you’re doing this, maintain your chest buoyant.

5. Plank

PlankPlank Posture is the final pose I recommend for strengthening your arms. In this position, you’ll be depending on the stacking of your arm bones for stability a bit more than in the others, but you’ll also be exercising all of the tiny supporting muscles in your chest, back, and shoulder girdle.

All of these will help you improve your arm strength. In this position, instead of dumping all of your weight onto your joints, deliberately hug your arm muscles in towards your arm bones.
