Drug reformers are celebrating yet another major hurdle in California’s push towards legalizing psychedelic substances. On Friday, the state’s Senate approved a bill that would allow the use of cannabis and psychedelics, such as LSD, psilocybin and ayahuasca, with a doctor’s prescription.
Some big news has just come out of California, but it isn’t related to the much-anticipated release of the iPhone 8. California has passed the nation’s first bill legalizing psychedelic drugs, which will lead to them being available to all California residents who can legally access them.
As the country continues to shift in favor of decriminalizing or legalizing psychedelics, California’s State Assembly voted to legalize synthetic marijuana in a bill that will now be sent to the Senate for consideration. If passed by the Senate, the bill would make it legal for adults over the age of 18 to possess up to one ounce of synthetic cannabinoids, which are synthetic, synthetic compounds used as substitutes for marijuana.
In an important step for the psychedelic industry, a bill was recently passed by a second California Senate committee that would legalize possession of many different forms of psychoactive drugs in the Golden State.
The legislation, authored by Senator Scott Wiener (D), was approved earlier this month by the Public Safety Committee and a week later by the Public Health Committee. If passed in its entirety, this bill would legalize a comprehensive list of psychedelic substances, including psilocybin mushrooms, DMT, ibogaine, LSD and MDMA, for adults 21 and older.
The war on drugs has failed completely because it is based on a false belief, the false idea that criminalizing people, arresting them, jailing them for drug possession will somehow prevent drug use and increase public safety, Wiener said before the vote. He did neither.
Instead, we’ve spent trillions of dollars on the war on drugs over the last half century, now more people are using drugs, there are more addictions, more overdoses – I’m talking about drugs in general, not psychedelics. And we’re spending taxpayer money, and we need to go to a more medical approach, he added.
Under the bill, the Department of Health is to establish a task force to study and recommend possible regulatory schemes that California could adopt to ensure safe and equitable access to certain substances in permitted legal settings. These recommendations are expected by 1 January 2011. January 2024.
In addition, the bill overturns convictions for possession of psychedelic drugs, just as the state seeks to overturn convictions for possession of cannabis, and revises the definition of paraphernalia that may be possessed and used with these newly legalized substances.
The bill ends the use of peyote, an endangered plant, to ensure that it remains available for traditional spiritual practices of Native Americans, according to the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, or MAPS, a global organization for research and education on psychedelics.
Many cities, states and regions in the United States have already relaxed restrictions on the therapeutic use of psychedelic mushrooms, including all of Oregon and New Jersey, Denver CO, Oakland CA and Washington DC.
Psychedelic drugs have been shown to treat many different mental disorders – such as depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder – in a safe, natural and effective way. Anecdotal evidence suggests that even a single dose can cause irreversible changes in the way our brains work for the better. Legalization would allow for much more extensive research, which is desperately needed at this time.Since the 1960s and 70s, psychedelic drugs — including LSD, psilocybin and DMT — have been prohibited in the United States. But in recent years, thousands of people have discussed the potential health benefits of these drugs.
