I’ve always been a big believer in the power of ketosis. It’s the metabolic state your body is naturally in between carbohydrate and fat intake, where your body is burning pure fat for fuel.
After a lifetime of unhealthy eating habits, Tanisha decided to change her ways. She started with a stricter diet by reducing all forms of sugar, carbs, and gluten. Her goal was to become a long term keto eater. Incorporating most of the healthy foods she missed, she achieved a net loss of 80 lbs in 3 months.
Tanisha Barrios began her journey on January 31st, 2018, and her story was one that we had previously encountered in the keto community: a person who tried and failed on other diets, and then decided to give keto a try. At the beginning, she tipped the scale at 145lbs, but she had never even heard of keto, and she doubted that she could do it. She tried to begin with the simple approach of eating only meat, and she continued to lose weight, and her body looked great. But when she started to moderate her diet and add vegetables, her weight began to creep back up. She attempted to moderate more, and closer to the beginning of her journey, she had lost about 40lbs. Tanisha’s weight fluctuated throughout her youth, but it wasn’t until high school that she began to acquire weight. She attempted every diet after graduation to reduce the 100 pounds she had gained, but to no effect.
I was completely hooked to carbohydrates and consumed sweets on a daily basis. It was carbohydrate-based even when I was on a diet. She made the decision to alter her life after being diagnosed with gestational diabetes. I realized I was on the verge of becoming pre-diabetic, and this was the wake-up call I needed.
Her initial choice was to undergo weight reduction surgery, but her insurance would not cover it. Perhaps it was destiny, since she met a buddy who had lost a lot of weight on the keto diet not long after. Tanisha was intrigued since it sounded unlike anything she had ever tasted before.
Tanisha began a low-carb diet in May 2018 and then transitioned to a complete keto diet in July.
The keto diet’s first week did not go as planned. I ate pork with barbecue sauce and bacon without doing any study. She had put on weight and was in poor health.
She read a lot of articles on diet hazards and how to avoid them, so she took careful to read labels and keep track of her carbohydrate intake. She dropped 80 pounds in approximately eight months. When she stopped paying attention to what she ate, her weight reduction decreased, which is why she emphasizes the necessity of paying attention to what you eat.
A typical day of eating
Tanisha usually eats three meals each day and does not fast. Here are some of her favorite meals.
- Scrambled eggs with cheese and avocado for breakfast
- Cabbage with Italian sausage for lunch
- Dinner: Butter-baked shrimp and cauliflower
- Almonds or peppers (sometimes) as a snack
- Dessert: Berries and sugar-free whipped cream
Tanisha used to exercise a lot before starting the keto diet, but it didn’t help her lose weight. As a result, she believes the exercise isn’t required. She stopped exercising entirely when she began the keto diet so she could concentrate on developing healthier eating habits and not feel overwhelmed.
Tanisha’s best keto advice for newbies
Tanisha offers three suggestions for people who are just getting started.
- Don’t be too hard on yourself. It’s important to recognize that we all make errors (from which we may learn) and that this is a necessary part of any weight-loss program.
- You didn’t acquire weight overnight, so don’t expect to reduce it anytime soon. You will achieve success if you set realistic goals. When you’re stuck in a rut, celebrating little successes can keep you motivated.
- Keep an eye on what you consume. Read the labels, examine the ingredients, and keep track of your carbohydrates. This is the simplest method for learning how to do keto properly.
