There are a few important issues to consider when it comes to whether or not to take medication while following a low carb, ketogenic (aka keto) diet. The answer for some of these questions is yes, while others are a little more complicated. It is important to understand the possible side effects of medications, especially when diet is the reason for taking them. Take this as a starter in your exploration of medication and keto.
The ketogenic diet is all the rage these days. You may have heard of it as a way to lose weight, but what most people don’t know is how it’s calculated. The diet is based on the notion that you’re supposed to use up your body’s stored fat to turn it into energy. This can be difficult to do when you’re on a low-carb diet, since you’re supposed to be getting most of your calories from fat.

Is there a sugar free syrup I can use for keto roasts?
Lakanto’s sugar-free maple-flavored syrup is a great alternative. However, I have started using pure maple syrup extract in melted butter or homemade whipped cream with Swerve powder. There is a maple flavor without the syrup.
In addition to Tara’s favorites, our team also loves this sugar-free syrup:
– Walden Farms Maple Syrup: It is suitable for the keto diet and very tasty! – Lina
– Cary’s Sugar Free Maple Syrup: I ate it at Denny’s! It’s surprisingly good. – Jamie
– Ma’am. Butterworth’s Sugar Free Syrup: I really don’t notice any difference from the real syrup, and everyone in my family uses it, keto or not. – Michelle
Hip rat: Make these easy dip pancakes in a blueberry muffin [pictured above] (they only have 3 carbs)!
What medications can affect dietary ketosis?
All medications, even over-the-counter ones like ibuprofen and Tylenol, can amplify the effects of ketosis, so many people on medications may want to reduce their dose or stop altogether.
Everyone is different, and if you are on medication prescribed by your doctor, you should discuss the dosage with your doctor when you begin a ketogenic diet. If you occasionally take over-the-counter medicines, half the dose is sufficient. Again: Please consult your doctor if you have any questions.
Why am I still hungry after a week of keto?
If you’re not getting the effects of appetite suppression, you should probably add more fat. Fat is the key to feeling full. In addition, cravings persist until the fat is fully adjusted, which usually takes a few weeks and sometimes longer, depending on the person.
Be patient and check it again to be sure:
- not too many carbohydrates/proteins
- Add enough fat
- stay well hydrated and keep the electrolyte balance in check
Next: Ask our dietician: Net and total carbohydrates, exercise and collagen
