As a health and fitness enthusiast, I’ve spent many long hours in front of the TV. It’s a great way to spend time with loved ones as we watch our favorite programs, but it can also be a time wasted in front of the TV. I know how it can be—I once found myself in a position of doing yoga poses on the sofa while watching an episode of Friends. On the other hand, there are times when it’s tough to find a way to fit in a good yoga practice, but it’s also tough to find a way to fit in a good Netflix binge session, too.

No one will deny that you can practice mindfulness while watching television. Any real meaning in practice would be drowned out by a constant episode of Marco Polo.

But if you do plan on staying, it doesn’t hurt to relax into a few poses that will help you release your body and deepen your practice in class. And while it will never be considered an actual practice, it may be just what you need to soothe your body for the night while you watch your favorite show.

Here are some yoga poses that you can also do while sitting on the couch watching TV.

1. Simple pose (Sukhasana)

Sit with your legs crossed, stretch your spine and lower your shoulders. A simple pose can open the hips and free up the quadriceps. The trick is to remember to cross your legs regularly. This changes the way the sitting person’s bones are pressed against the carpet, floor, ceiling or rug.

2. Sitting forward bending wide (Upavishtha Konasana)

Attach your sit bones to the mat or floor and spread your legs wide. The spine is long, and you can try variations, for example. B. Sit up straighter and try to bring your chest to the floor.

You can also try flexing your toes and then leading by tightening your quadriceps and then releasing. To relieve the hamstring, you can place blocks (or pillows) under each hip.

3. Closed Angle Posture (Baddha Konasana)

Sit with the soles of your feet together, knees open to the maximum. The hands may reach the feet, rest on the knees or interlock with the toes.

Baddha Konasana is another heavy hip stretch pose that can be made more relaxed by placing blocks, blankets or pillows to stretch less and relax more.

4. Spinal column turn with support on two knees (Supta Matsyendrasana)

Lie on your back and bring your knees to your chest. Lower your knees to the side with your stomach and rest them on the floor or ceiling.

Spread your arms (from above you look like a big T) and look in the opposite direction of your feet. Change sides. Try variations, such as. B. Stretch your legs instead of keeping them bent, or cross one bent knee with the other side.

Play around with the options – there are almost as many as there are new releases on Netflix.

5. Feet on the wall (Viparita Karani)

Press one hip against the wall. In one movement, place your feet against the wall and lower your shoulders slightly to the ground.

If you are uncomfortable, you can use a bolster or folded blankets to support your hips or lower back. The legs can be placed directly against the wall or opened further.
