What is it?
The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the hip and along the lower back into each leg. In fact, it’s the longest nerve in your body. Sciatica is the name given to the pain felt along the sciatic nerve.
People suffering from sciatica usually have constant pain in their side, hip or leg. Some people complain of pain in the lower back, the back of the hip or the hamstring joint. Sciatica is not usually described as a chronic pain, but as a sharp, stabbing pain or numbness and tingling.
Why does it hurt so much?
Sciatica can be caused by a number of conditions, but is most commonly caused by nerve entrapment in the lower back. According to Dr. Steven Hochschuler, MD, it depends on which spinal nerve is being compressed and the intensity of the pain.
The nerve roots that exit the spine and form the sciatic nerve are very sensitive and can be easily irritated by a herniated disc. Dr. Hochschuler says that in this case, the pain radiates to the back, the back of the hips and the calves. Because the causes can be so varied, it is important to make a correct diagnosis in order to choose the right treatment.
Remember: Improper performance of the exercises can aggravate the disease. This means that a single solution for the treatment is unfortunately not usable.
What you can do about it, with yoga
In other words, yoga can help relieve and prevent symptoms. And in my opinion, prevention is the best cure.
Of the many ways to relieve sciatica pain, yoga is considered by many experts to be the best method for treatment and, as mentioned, prevention. Consult your physician or physical therapist before performing any of the exercises listed below.
Move consciously, with presence and listen to your body’s signals. You’re thin, so move slow. If you feel pain or resistance, stop.
1. Deck installation
bridge is a great pose that strengthens the lower back. It also stretches the hip muscles and strengthens the inner thighs.
Make sure you use your inner thighs to activate this movement. To do this, place a block between your thighs. Press on the ankle of your big toe and squeeze the block with your inner thighs. As you move forward and the pain goes away, you can remove the block and just squeeze your knees together.
Try not to arch the lower back, but create a long line of energy. Hold this position for 3 to 5 breaths and repeat three times.
2. Eagle pose
Eagle is a softener for all joints and can be therapeutic for sciatica. Try to widen your upper back, align your elbows with your shoulders, squat lower and stretch your collarbones forward to sit up straight.
If this pose is new to you, it may be difficult to wrap the crossed leg around the ankle of the standing leg. Instead, simply cross your leg and press the tip of the knife or the little finger of the crossed leg against the side of the calf of the standing leg.
3. Pyramidal position
Many patients with sciatica (again, not all, depending on the specific cause of the sciatica) benefit greatly from a complete release of the hamstrings. Excessive strain on the hamstrings causes tension in the lower back and can worsen sciatica.
With this in mind, perform the pyramid (and all Achilles tendon stretches!) carefully and deliberately. Maybe you are not one of those people who find it therapeutic!
From the mountain pose, take about two steps backwards while keeping your foot pain-free. Point the toes of the back foot to the front corner of the mat (on the same side). This helps straighten your hips. Do hip thrust exercises with your back flat until your shoulders are in line with your hips. Keep your back straight and reach for the floor or rest your arms on two blocks on either side of your extended leg.
Hold this position for five to seven long breaths and repeat on the other side.
